De Vere Tutors

‘The one exclusive sign of thorough knowledge is the power of teaching.’
Aristotle

At De Vere Tutors we aim to inspire upcoming generations by making teachers of students and nurturing young scholars. Over time we shall be adding undergraduates to our roll of tutors and mentoring them as they develop their teaching talents. The advantage of having a mixture of student and mature tutors is that the two can learn from each other. The student is necessarily closer to the exam system with its exigencies and pitfalls, while the mature tutor has a more long-term perspective. Every younger tutor is overseen by an experienced mentor in what is a tightly-knit team able to deliver a tailored service. Not only does this variety of energies benefit our tutees, but the different levels of experience are reflected in a sliding scale of charges.

Charles Beauclerk (Lead Tutor):
Latin, Greek, English

Magnus Smellie (Student Tutor):
Latin, Greek (for Common Entrance, GCSE, AS & A Level)

After five years at Radley College Magnus is currently on a gap year before taking up his place to read Classics at Robinson College, Cambridge. He has been learning Latin for 9 years and Greek for 7, and achieved A*s at A-Level in both subjects. He has taught Latin to beginners at a local school, and has sat in on Mr. Beauclerk’s lessons for several months. Over the course of his time studying Latin and Greek Magnus has read epic poetry, lyric poetry, tragedy, history and oratory in both languages and has been involved in helping A-Level students at Radley engage with the set texts. He has a real passion for Classics and hopes to convey this to all his students.

Louise Peillon (Student Tutor):
French (for Common Entrance, GCSE, AS & A Level)

Louise is currently in her first year studying English and Italian at Nanterre Université. Having achieved 'Mention assez bien' in the Literary Baccalauréat two years ago, she spent a year as a French language teaching assistant at Radley College, an experience which improved her English to a fluent level.  She taught Students with various levels of French, helping them work towards their GCSE and A-level exams. Most of this teaching was in a one-on-one setting, allowing Louise to help correct linguistic errors at the same time as encouraging English speakers to speak and, more importantly, enjoy speaking French.
